Mark Your Calendars – The Atchafalaya Basin Needs You!
Our Basin’s cypress wetlands protect us from floodwaters, provide habitat for our fish and wildlife, and provide public waters for everyone to enjoy. But we are losing these wetland forests because of built-up sediments that transform our swamps, lakes and bayous into dry uplands.
The proposed East Grand Lake Project will speed up the loss of irreplaceable cypress forests in the Bayou Sorrel area, reducing the capacity of the Basin to store flood waters and protect South Central Louisiana from Mississippi River floods. The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) is the state water quality agency that is now considering whether the project meets state water quality standards. The agency will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, Dec. 6th in Iberville Parish to hear the public’s comments on the proposed project.
Our Basin’s ability to protect and serve future generations is at risk – will you come to its aid? Over 700 individuals have already signed a petition to stop the East Grand Lake project Online Petition. Now we are asking you to follow through and join us at a public hearing to show your support for the Basin and opposition to East Grand Lake and similar projects that destroy our cypress forests and fill up the swamps. SPEAKING IS NOT REQUIRED! Simply showing up is more than enough to send a statement to the state that Louisianans will no longer allow our government agencies to authorize the destruction of irreplaceable cypress forests and flood capacity in the Basin.
Still have questions? Want to know more about East Grand Lake
If you can make it, sign up. We will send you talking points and have a debriefing meeting ahead of the hearing. Register HERE.
